Common Core State Standards Initiative

The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a set of standards developed by the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO). The Standards are sanctioned by the states, but they are not the result of a government commission or a federal mandate.

Common Core State Standards focus on developing skill sets that will prepare students for college or a career by high school graduation. CCSSO determined what they felt students should be able to do by the time they graduate high school, and they have developed a curriculum map from kindergarten through high school to help teachers and students develop a stronger classroom.
